10 Best BL Anime To Binge-Watch in 2021

I am sure if you clicked on this link you must be familiar with the genre BL which is an acronym for Boy’s Love. It is a genre that primarily focuses on the relationships between two people whose physical gender is male.

Personally, I love rom-com anime and when I came across anime where the love interests were two males, I was over the moon. I have almost watched all the BL anime there is to watch and even watched where there was even a hint of BL.

The thing is that there aren’t many BL anime out there and the primary reason is due to so much hate and taboo revolving around the genre. As a result of this, most creators often don’t outwardly put the anime under the Yaoi/BL/Shounen Ai genre. Nevertheless, we can only hope that more and more people would start appreciating the genre and the work of the creators.

And without further ado, here is a list of BL anime that you can watch this year.

Yuri!!! On Ice

Yuri!!! On Ice is one of the last anime that I watched in this category. For months, I was questioning whether I should invest my time in this anime or not, but boy! was I wrong. The anime is full of love, laughter, friendship, and just so much excitement that you cannot stop looking at the screen.

This is one of the few anime that you could watch again and again and would not get bored. As I am writing this blog post, I am reminiscing how good the show was and I think I am probably going to watch it again after I am done writing this blog post.

Also, one side note, this anime does not really go all out on Yaoi scenes but that shouldn’t really be a problem as the show is simply a masterpiece.

I took the 0.5 marks for a very important reason and you will get it once you watch the show.

My Rating: 9.5/10

Heaven Official’s Blessing

Okay, this anime is based on the manga of a similar name and it just came out in late 2020 and is still ongoing. I was already hooked on the manga but the anime creators have done a far better job. I mean this anime has such cute scenes between the protagonists that my heart goes all fluffy and as I am writing it, I can’t stop smiling because I just imagined the cute scenes. Also, the art style, character design, storyline, and overall anime are simply beautiful. But it the bond and relationship between the main characters that make anime so much cuter, to say the least.

Note that the first three episodes could feel a bit slow but as soon as the second mc enters in the fourth episode, the whole story picks up and runs at a high speed to the rom-com world. Trust me, this anime has everything down, and watching it won’t disappoint you even in the least. Also, the songs in the anime are just mwahh!

January 2021 Update: The first season of the anime finished with 11 episodes and is available online to watch. Recently, it was announced that the second season is in the making and should be released soon. Can’t wait!

My Rating: 10/10

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation also known as Mo Dao Zhu Shi is based on a BL Chinese novel. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that you will fall in love with this anime, the anime has a lot to offer with a great storyline, art, and most importantly, the MCs themselves give life to the anime. Both Lan Wangji and Wei WuXian have amazing chemistry and the way their relationship progresses with time is simply adorable. In addition, the anime has super awesome fight scenes. Also, just like Heaven Official’s Blessing, this anime also some great songs.

The anime has two seasons out already and the third season is ongoing and will be released in the US and other countries soon. The anime is also adopted into a series and is available on Netflix. Once you’re done with the anime, I would recommend watching the series The Untamed as it answers a lot of questions that were left in the anime.

My Rating: 9/10

Hitorijime My Hero

Hitorijime My Hero is an anime that offers viewers two couples to cheer for, one of the two main couples is the super adorable student-teacher couple, and the other, a student-student couple. The anime can be considered a lite version of Yaoi or simply Shounen Ai as the anime does not go all out on Yaoi scenes but instead gives viewers a lot of super adorable couple moments. It is a great anime to binge-watch on a winter night as it is only 12 episodes. Also, the anime will come with a second season as the manga progresses.

My Rating: 8.5/10

Love Stage

Ah! here comes an anime that was released in 2010 and sure feels like it. Love Stage is a cute watch but personally, I don’t feel like it is an anime that you will like to re-watch again and again unlike some of my other anime mentioned on the list. For an anime released 10 years back, it sure is is a good BL anime (offcourse, a lite yaoi version). The Japanese anime has a lot of cute moments mixed with a lot of “Shoujo” comedy moments as well. In short, watching this anime will bring back childhood memories with a BL twist to it.

My Rating: 8.2/10

Spiritpact

Spiritpact is an anime that I was constantly avoiding as I didn’t feel it was “that” good of an anime from what I read from the reviews but boy! was I wrong again. The anime is great from episode one, it sure is not a slow burn and even has a comedic touch to it which makes the watch even more entertaining. The relationship between the MCs is great and how their relationship progresses makes the watch so much more fulfilling.

The anime has two seasons and the third season should be out once the dispute between the director and the author is resolved. The manga is ongoing but I would not recommend reading the manga as the anime is much better and there are a lot of differences between the manga and the anime which will ruin your experience. So, please wait for the third season, and until then, read some other manga or watch any other anime on the list.

My Rating: 9/10

Given

Given is a lot more realistic as compared to some other BL anime out there. The anime revolves around the relationship of two students whose love and interest in music brings them closer and closer. There are some cute scenes between the main MCs that will just make your heart squeak and make you root for them more and more. By the time, you will reach the last episodes, you will have already fallen in love with the MCs. Although let me warn you that this anime is a bit of a slow burn and it is not until the last few episodes that there is some progress between the main MCs. Nonetheless, the anime is a heartful watch.

My Rating: 8.8/10

Junjou Romantica

Even though Junjou Romantica is one of the oldest BL anime out there, the creators have blessed the viewers with a lot of Yaoi scenes. You will find more kiss and love scenes (of course lite version) in this anime than compared to a lot of anime on this list. In addition to the avalanche of cute Yaoi scenes between the MCs, the anime has a lot of comedic moments as well which makes the watch so much more entertaining. Seriously, it is one of the favorite animes amongst the BL lovers and I am sure, you will love it too.

My Rating: 8.8/10

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi – The World’s Greatest First Love

This anime has a similar feel as Junjou Romantica simply because it is a spin-off of the anime. Sekaiichi Hatsukoi has a similar art style and character design and therefore, it might feel as if you’re watching the continuation of Junjou Romantica. This anime also has a lot of kiss and adorable love scenes which will make your mood all happy-happy. Both anime revolves around a number of couples which can be a little frustrating for some, still, the anime is a cute watch and I am sure you will enjoy watching it.

My Rating: 8.8/10

Super Lovers

Super Lovers is a weird yet cute anime. This anime is weird because of the relationship that ties the MCs together, both are step-brothers which can make a lot of viewers cringe a bit and that is why the anime faces a lot of criticism. If we can set this fact aside, the anime is a cute watch with a lot of kiss scenes. Personally, I am not a fan of Super Lovers and I am not sure why? I mean, I love the art style, character design, the story is also fine but there is just something that makes me not really a fan of the anime. Nevertheless, it honestly depends on person to person and it is not like I hate the anime.

My Rating: 8.2/10

Final Thoughts

I hope you found something to watch on the list. Also, I have not added some Yaoi OVAs to the list and will make a separate list for it. If you’re done with all the anime on the list, you can start reading manga. Now, as an avid fan myself, I have got you covered. Click on the link and check out the list of my favorite BL manga out there.
